Immigration Work Force
Some people think that immigrants came from only one specific place which they are really wrong immigrants came Northern and western Europe and many other places in 1910 eastern and southern Europeans were the ones to made up 70 percent of the immigrants entering the country. the immigrants didn't just leave because they wanted to they had plenty of different reasons like some immigrants were escaping religious, racial, and political persecution, many people were pushed out of their homelands because of a contract labor agreements. It was Italians, Greeks, and polish Jews worked the needle trades or pushcart market of new York. There were a lot of immigrants who left their country because they couldn't afford first or second-Class passage which was a processing center Ellis Island, new York immigrants would get detained 3 or 4 hours and then after they were free to leave, they needed to get a approval and if they didn't deemed criminals and strikebreakers and they were send back to their country.
Ellis Island
Ellis Island was opened in the upper New york Harbor in 1892 and it closed in the 1954 it was a principal federal immigration station, the amount of immigrants that were processed was more than 12 million. the immigrants had to pass a series of medical and legal inpection that lasted 3 to 5 hours to those immigrants who didn't pass the inpections were returned to their contury in boats. The percentage was a small amount but its still sad to know that those who came to a better country for a better lives had to be stuck with their old lives, all thier hopes and dreams were turn into tears.
Arrival
A immigrants that was interviewed in 1985 said that they were put on a barge that was tight and they could bearly turn around becasue they was so many of them "the stench was terrible" he said. Each year during the year 1900-1914 approximately one million immigrants would arrive officers would go on board checking for signs off epidemic diseases, if the people on the ship were free of disease the doctors would examine the first and second class passengers. If there was new arrivals they had to wait aboard in their ships for days before being transferred to Ellis Island. Just imagen being on a ship for hours or maybe even days with out food or water just waiting or your turn to be inspected they would stand out there in the cold also in extremely hot summers.
